About Second Grain Woodcraft

Furniture is one of the few things in a home that truly lives life alongside you.

It holds family dinners, late-night conversations, birthdays, holidays, hard seasons, celebrations, and ordinary moments that become important years later. That’s why I believe furniture should be built with intention — not simply manufactured for convenience.

My name is Bobby, and I’m the craftsman behind Second Grain Woodcraft, a Denver-based custom furniture studio specializing in handcrafted hardwood dining tables, custom dining sets, and heirloom-quality furniture built to last for generations.

Not years. Generations.

How It Started

Woodworking entered my life during one of the hardest seasons I’ve ever faced.

During a divorce and custody battle, I needed something that grounded me — something that gave me peace, purpose, and a way to stay connected to my children during an incredibly painful time. Woodworking became that place for me.

In the middle of chaos, the shop was calm.

What began as a personal refuge slowly became something more. I started sharing projects online, posting progress photos and finished pieces. Before long, people began asking me to build custom furniture for them. One project became another, and eventually Second Grain Woodcraft was born.

The name “Second Grain” reflects both the beauty I find in natural wood and the deeper meaning this craft has carried in my own life. Every board has a grain pattern unlike any other — impossible to perfectly duplicate.

Second Grain represents both the uniqueness found in natural wood and the belief that people, like raw lumber, can be refined, restored, and shaped into something beautiful.

That belief, along with the teachings of Jesus and the importance of grace, patience, and love, continues to shape both my work and the way I approach this business.

Handcrafted Hardwood Furniture Built To Last

I do not build disposable furniture.

Every piece is built using hand-selected premium hardwoods — no particle board, veneers, MDF, or mass-produced shortcuts. I primarily work with oak, ash, and mahogany, though I also build custom hardwood furniture using walnut, maple, cherry, and alder.

I prioritize traditional wood joinery whenever possible and focus heavily on durability, structure, and finish quality.

Two dining tables may look similar in photos, but what happens beneath the surface matters.

The type of finish used.
The quality of the paint.
The joinery methods.
The preparation work.
The attention to wood movement.
The patience during construction.

Those details determine whether a table lasts 5 years… or becomes something your grandchildren fight over one day.

I offer a lifetime craftsmanship guarantee because my goal is simple:

To build solid wood furniture worthy of being handed down.

Custom Furniture Designed Around Your Home

Every piece I build is custom or semi-custom.

Some customers come to me with a clear vision for their custom dining table or dining set. Others simply know they want something meaningful, high-quality, and built specifically for their home. Honestly, I love those collaborations most.

No two boards are identical, and no two builds truly are either.

Even when recreating one of my previous furniture designs, the natural character of solid hardwood ensures every piece becomes one-of-a-kind.

I also refuse to directly copy another maker’s work. Inspiration is one thing. Replication is another. Every custom furniture build should carry its own identity.

Because every project is built one at a time, collaboration is an important part of the process. From dimensions and wood species to finishes and design details, I work closely with customers throughout the build to ensure the final piece feels personal, intentional, and truly theirs.

A Different Approach to Craftsmanship

I’m not a factory.

I don’t rush projects, and I don’t compete to be the cheapest option available.

Quality craftsmanship takes time, careful decision-making, and patience. My customers are typically people who value longevity, intentional design, and the story behind what they bring into their home.

When I build a table, I try to approach it as if I were building it for someone I deeply love.

Because my hope is that one day, the person receiving it will pass it down to someone they love too.

While I personally build nearly every aspect of each piece, I also believe quality matters more than ego. If a specific component requires a specialist or equipment beyond my shop’s capabilities, I work with trusted craftsmen to ensure the final result meets the standard my customers expect. Every piece is still assembled, finished, and personally overseen by me.

Life Outside the Shop

When I’m not building handcrafted furniture, I’m usually spending time with my wife Kendra, my son Wesley, and my daughter Lauryn.

We love hiking, spontaneous adventures, and simply enjoying whatever season of life we’re currently in together.

Second Grain Woodcraft isn’t a corporation or production facility.

It’s a craftsman, his family, and a belief that meaningful things are still worth building carefully.
